Freedom Beach

This is a lovely beach. It is a liitle difficult to reach but it is worth the effort.

It is a stretch of white, powdery sand in a small bay. The beach is surrounded by hills and ringed with trees.

The boats deliver visitors to the center of the beach. The north and south ends of the beach are cordoned off for swimming.

The cordoned off section at the south end of the beach (the end with the small restaurants) is one of the best snorkeling locations in Phuket. The rocks and corals start close to shore. Initially it looks like it might be disappointing with cloudy water and lots of flattened coral destroyed by the tsunami. However, as you push out into the deeper water the visibility clears and a lot of the corals survived. There are plenty of colourful fish including some large specimens.

The cordoned off section at the north end of the beach has a sandy seabed ideal for bathing.

There are a few small restaurants and a seating area at the south end of the beach. There are sun loungers for rent at the back of the beach under the coconut palms. There are also toilets and showers.

The locals who run the beach keep it clean and well organised. The jet-skis and banana boats stay away. There is a beach volleyball net and two five-a-side football goals on the beach for a bit of activity.

How to Get There

Until recently it was only possible to reach this beach by boat. There is now a track to the beach sugnposted from the road between Patong and Karon.

The other option is to hire a longtail boat from the pier area at the south end of Patong Beach The boat should cost 1000 to 1500 baht depending on the number of people. From here, you have a pleasant 15-minute trip around the headland to Freedom Beach. You will pass Tri Tra Beach, Paradise Beach, Tri Trang Beach and a couple of tiny, sandy coves that we felt were too small to include in our beach guide.

You can also try to hire a boat from the north end of Karon Beach. A cheaper alternative is to hire from Tri Trang Beach which is the closest beach and may cost as little as 500 baht. The problem is the boats do not wait here so you may wait some time to get one.
